Starting around age 30, you begin to lose muscle mass, and that loss accelerates in your 40s and doubles after 60. But this isn’t just about aging—it’s about hormones. As estrogen and progesterone decline, your sleep, mood, recovery, insulin sensitivity, and metabolism all take a hit. This hormonal shift can lead to increased fat storage (especially around the midsection), inflammation, and muscle loss.
But here's the good news: strength training is one of the most powerful tools you have to fight back. Lifting heavy supports:
✔️ Insulin sensitivity
✔️ Estrogen and testosterone balance
✔️ Reduced inflammation
✔️ Muscle mass (which = a faster metabolism)
✔️ Bone density (hello, osteoporosis prevention)
Cardio alone won’t cut it—especially the long, moderate-intensity kind. It may actually elevate cortisol and break you down, not build you up.
I also share why every woman should consider a DXA scan (for bone and muscle health), how to interpret shifting body fat distribution in midlife, and why muscle is the most metabolically active organ in your body.

Is it too late at 60?
It’s never too late! Go get ‘em, girl!
Nope !!
What I need is for someone to tell me how to define “heavy”. I’m 52, and currently deadlifting 135 lbs. (3 sets of 5). Is this good? Average? Where do I go from here?
Wow that’s great!
