When you're constantly struggling to keep weight off, it can be frustrating. You may feel like you're doing everything right, but the pounds still won't budge. A lot of people believe that a leaky gut could be the reason for their weight struggles. So, what is leaky gut and could it be the root of your problems? Keep reading to find out!
What is Leaky Gut?
When you have a leaky gut, it means that there are small gaps between the cells in your intestinal lining. This can allow undigested particles of food, bacteria, yeast and other toxins to travel into your bloodstream where they don't belong. Once these particles are in your bloodstream, they can cause all kinds of health problems. Your immune system may overreact to them which can lead to inflammation which could worsen autoimmune diseases or even make autoimmune diseases worse.
If you already have an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, celiac disease, or lupus, having a leaky gut could make symptoms worse because you're introducing more foreign invaders into your body when the gaps in your gut lining allow particles into your bloodstream.
What Causes Leaky Gut?
When you have a leaky gut, it means that your digestive system isn't working properly and there are gaps in your intestinal lining which allow particles of food and other substances to pass through. Several things can lead to this including:
Eating a poor diet
If you eat a lot of processed foods or if you eat lots of high-carbohydrate foods, the excess sugar can damage the cells in your intestinal lining. If they're damaged, they won't work as well and could lead to gaps in the lining which leads to a leaky gut.
Inflammation
Inflammation is one of the leading causes of autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's hypothyroidism. It can damage cells in your gut, both directly and indirectly. Directly, it causes our immune system to attack healthy cells thinking they're foreign invaders like viruses or bacteria. Indirectly, it can cause an increase in substances that lead to inflammation called cytokines which leads to the same problems as inflammation itself.
Stress
If you're constantly stressed out about something, whether it's work, family or anything else, it could lead to leaky guts because cortisol is one of the leading hormones released during stress. People with thyroid issues are often sensitive to cortisol so if cortisol levels are too high for too long or if cortisol isn't broken down properly due to other underlying factors like nutrient deficiencies, having high levels for a long period can cause damage to cells in the gut.
Imbalances in bacteria
Researchers believe that people who are overweight tend to have different gut bacteria than people with average or low body weights. This imbalance of gut flora could lead to inflammation or poor digestion which could lead to a leaky gut. There are some things you can do right now to improve your digestive health, including taking a high-quality probiotic, eating fermented foods and reducing your stress levels.
How Do I Know if I Have Leaky Gut Syndrome?
There are several symptoms of the leaky gut syndrome but here is a list of common signs:
- Abdominal pain after meals
- Bloating
- Stomach cramps
- Diarrhea
- Food sensitivities
- Constipation
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Mood swings
- Autoimmune conditions
If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor to test for the leaky gut syndrome. It's also a good idea to take a stool analysis because digestive problems can be caused by many different things so it's important to get the right diagnosis before you start treating an illness.
How Do I Treat Leaky Gut?
Studies show that there are certain lifestyle changes you can make which may improve leaky gut including:
- Getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night
- Avoiding stress
- Eating lots of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables
- Drinking at least half your body weight in ounces of water
- Meditating daily
- Cutting out alcohol
- Exercising on most days
- Improving your digestion with high-quality probiotics and digestive enzymes
- Using a gentle detoxification protocol
- Taking supplements to support intestinal health, liver function and your immune system
It's also important to avoid foods that may irritate your gut lining. These include gluten, dairy, inflammatory oils like vegetable oil and soybean oil, refined sugar and processed foods in general. Eating a healthy diet of fresh nutrient-dense whole foods is one of the best ways to heal leaky gut syndrome naturally without resorting to drugs or surgery.
