You might be retired, but you're still young at heart and want to enjoy life. But if you've been feeling a little sluggish lately, it's time to take some action. You can't let your weight get out of control because that can lead to all sorts of health problems over the years. And the worst part is that it doesn't have to happen gradually–it can happen quickly! That's why it's important for retirees who are looking for ways to get back on track with their fitness goals or just lose a few pounds should consider these 3 tips:
1. Make A Plan
The first thing you should do is make a plan of attack, which can help you avoid some pitfalls and obstacles along the way. But don't think of this as a short-term solution–you'll need to follow it for a while until you start to see real results. If you're on the go a lot during the day, consider packing your lunch so that you can bring healthy choices with you wherever you go. The last thing seniors want to do is quit because they feel like it's become too much work or they can't maintain their new schedule.
2. Don't Skip Meals
One mistake many people make when trying to lose weight is that they think that skipping meals will help them cut calories. While it does cut calories, you could end up feeling even hungrier because your body will be looking for something to eat–and that's not all! Skipping meals can also affect your metabolism and make losing weight more difficult.
3. Exercise At Least 3 Times A Week
Many retirees think that because they're retired they don't need to exercise as much as people who are still working. That couldn't be further from the truth–especially if you want to lose weight over 60. Instead of doing high-intensity workouts, try doing activities like walking or riding your bike outside so you'll still reap the benefits of exercising but won't feel like this is a chore or struggle with time constraints. Once you start seeing results, you'll feel better about yourself, which can help you maintain your results.
If you're looking for ways to lose weight over 60, these tips are a great place to start. Since you have more time on your hands now that you've retired, there's no harm in making the most of it. And remember that this is just the starting point–once you do something like make healthier eating choices and exercise regularly, it shouldn't be hard to keep doing those things without giving it much thought. The key is to find something that works best for you!
Thank you for this video, I will be 62 in 4 months. I have been low carb, gluten free for almost a year and have dropped 50 pounds. The sugar was easier to drop than the bread, but I am feeling better and looking better. It is much harder as we get older.
@Dr. Becky Gillaspy yes it just takes making up your mind to eat healthy and make good choices. I yo-yo dieted for years and had pretty much given up till my daughter and I were diagnosed with PCOS- and learned what works and what doesn’t. It’s still slow, but is working. Live your videos they keep me motivated and on track.
I’m a 72 year old male who’s been on the LCHF lifestyle for 14 months. I’ve lost 55 pounds and improved blood conditions. Key to my success is my spouse of 49 years. Key supporter! Both of us are still very active.
Thank you for your continuing motivational videos. Being 62 I am even more aware how easy it is to fall into previous bad eating habits. Thank you for keeping me on track🤗🤗
I am a 63 year old healthcare provider (Optometrist). I have lost 80 lbs (similar to your husband’s story). I no longer need my CPAP for sleep apnea, off the 2 meds I was using for hypertension and A1c down from 9.9 to 4.9 without medication. In fact I take no medication of any kind now.
I lost 50 lbs in the first 5 months and additional 30 over the next 3-4 months.
I did LCHF and intermittent fasting and still do.
My only regret is that I didn’t know to try this 15-20 years ago.
“2 Fit Docs” and your individual channel have both been a great source inspiration and support in my journey. Thank you!
I am 63 and have had the same experience. Over the last 25 years I have had very little activity, WAY too much carb rich food and craft beer! I have undone 25 years of poor diet choices in 6 months with Keto and IF! All thanks to the principles taught by Becky and Keith. Better yet, I have learned how to manage my diet for a healthier last 3rd of my life! I too wish I would have known about this 20 years ago! Even better, several friends and family have reversed their issues based on my experience. How is this process still considered “underground” or at best, “alternative”?
I am 63 and was addicted to sugar. A pint of ice cream a day. Or a large bag of M&Ms. I gave up sugar in May and have not looked back. I no longer crave it and have lost weight. I plan on keeping sugar out of my diet.
Good on you… I agree with you I’m 57 and being either been a runner on my life I haven’t had a problem with weight but giving up sugar has been great for my body and encourage you to keep at it find some exercise that you find fun and enjoy your life.
Omg..wish I could give up sugar..I’m going to be 61 in October..any suggestions on how I can substitute some thing for sugar till I can stop….I’ve been struggling to quit eating sugar..I’m 5’5′ and 160..so I’m not terribly over weight..but I need help before I get really bad..HELP!! LOL..I have a back injury so my exercise is also limited 😥
@Michele Hice I’m 65 and I started June 1, 2020. I went cold turkey on sugar and foods that contain sugar. I could not “tone” it down. Chocolate calls out to me. So, cold turkey was the only way I could handle it. The first few days were rough. About the 5th day in, I realized it wasn’t bad at all. I could walk right by the cookies and candy at the store and not be tempted. I also have other health problems. High blood pressure, low thyroid, sleep apnea, Lots to loose. I’m down 27 pounds, have 75 to go. 1/4 of the way there! I’m the turtle. Next week I’m going to try some gentle exercises. Intermittent fasting helps. My husband and I have our first meal at noon and our last meal at 6pm. Can you do gentle walking?
I’m 77. went on keto at 209 pounds. at four months I’m 172. Take steps two at a time. Don’t need to spread my legs to make room for my belly when I squat.
Thank you for addressing over 60 weight loss! New sub here, at 65 weight watchers clicked for me, Iam down 42 lbs, it def
is a mind game, some days Iam more focused than others, but losing weight is more about food intake than exercise.
my wife is 67,has a knee replacement and is awaiting another plus waiting on rotator cuff operation.she cannot excersise yet has lost over 10 kilos by living the keto way.its been slow but steady
Thank you for this. I’ve succeeded to bring my weight down with fat intake increase and sugar/carb reduction. What I need to do is be more consistent with these, plus add the 16/8-hr. “intermittent fast” eating schedule. I know from occasionally bypassing late-night snacking that it does help. Thanks for presenting this wonderfully NOT-complicated advice.
I’m 52. Started keto in August and I’m down 46 pounds. I foresee this way of eating for the rest of my life. I have no cravings and am rarely actually hungry.
Dr. Becky, I have a question for you about bread. Have you ever heard of sprouted bread supposedly made from organic whole grain and other organic ingredients? My question is, will this supplement for white flour bread? It still has carbs though, like 20g per slice. I prefer this over white bread but I may be barking at the moon and just wishful thinking on my part. What do you recommend?
At 66 I found the weight loss to be easy. Prior to discovering Intermittent Fasting and Low Carb I was eating way too much sugar and simple (starchy) Carbs, plus my insulin levels were very high all the time. I was always tired, my joints hurt, and I felt like my brain was in a fog all the time. Once I discovered Intermittent Fasting and Low Carb, I was so desperate I was willing to try anything. Within 4 days I felt an improvement and by 2 weeks there was no doubt in my mind that I was on the right path. The pain I felt from excessive sugar and carbohydrates (high insulin) was enough to make me hate even thinking about having them. Now 6 months later I’m almost 60 pounds lighter and within 18 pounds of my ideal weight. I’ve been doing Intermittent Fasting and Low Carb for so many months it just seems so natural. I’m not sure what I’ll do once I reach my ideal weight, but I keep pushing as I move towards my dream.
67 YO avid fly fisherman here, who dropped 30lbs easily. I don’t miss the sugar. I fit into my waders. I sewed the buttons back on and wear all the pants I no longer could wear. I wear a size smaller shirt. Women flirt with me again!!!
