  1. ❤ thanks

  2. Thank you JJ! Now I’m not afraid to increase my protein and purposely try to build muscle! You explain it so well!❤

  3. I wonder if it’s not time to bring this back to the middle. Discounting the experiences of many, many women over many, many years as a “myth” is getting a little bit tired. I’m 43, female, 5’8″, and I went from 130 to 150 lbs in about 2 years with minimal fat gain. I practice calisthenics at a decently high level and I eat about 160g protein/day in a tiny calorie surplus. I’m getting another dexa scan in May so I’m not going to make any big claims right now, but just looking at photos of me, you can instantly see that I gained a lot of muscle mass especially in my upper body (I specialize in vertical pulling movements). Well… to the average person, I got bulky. My XS doesn’t fit as well, I mostly buy S now. People who aren’t in fitness comment on my body sometimes and it’s always a reference to how I’m big. I don’t think anyone is trying to be mean. I think they are remarking on the obvious fact that I am an imposing presence. I get that the word “bulky” is overused, like “journey” but we know what we mean, don’t we? There’s a visual heft to a woman with appreciable muscle mass even in the absence of bodyfat. I like how it looks on me, but I can easily accept that a lot of women wouldn’t like to look like this. I don’t even take creatine, this is not a steroid thing. This is just the result of doing heavy lifting. I mostly do 1-6 reps and sometimes to muscular failure. I’m not a competitive athlete; I’m just an amateur who loves the calisthenics modality and is in the gym 5x/week and trains hard. My goals for 2025 include to unlock the human flag. I’m a bit of an outlier in that I actually like working out, but I’m no athlete. And yeah, lifting made me bulky. Put me next to one of the pilates or running women and I don’t look like that. I don’t know why we have to pretend that this isn’t real or doesn’t happen. I’m certainly no genetic outlier either. I think if we can’t be honest about reality we have a problem. Show photos of women who are on steroids and show photos of women who are long-time heavy lifters without steroids and there is an obvious difference, but the latter are still bulky to the average onlooker.
