In a world where “go green” is the mantra, many people are looking to decrease their consumption of meat and animal products. Many choose to do this by consuming more plant-based foods, including corn. However, there are several compelling reasons to avoid eating corn. Here are 10:
1. Pesticides
Corn is one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the United States. In fact, according to the Environmental Working Group, more than 30 different pesticides are approved for use on corn. These toxic chemicals can end up in your food and have been linked to a variety of health problems, including cancer, reproductive damage, and hormone disruption.
2. GMOs
More than 90% of the corn grown in the United States is genetically modified. This means that it has been altered at the DNA level in order to make it resistant to herbicides or pests. While the long-term effects of consuming GMOs are not yet known, many people believe that they could lead to serious health problems down the road.
3. Allergies
Corn is one of the top eight allergens in the United States. If you're allergic to corn, even trace amounts can trigger a reaction. Symptoms include itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing.
4. Digestive problems
Corn is high in fiber, but it's also a type of sugar called fructose. For people with digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome or celiac disease, too much fructose can cause gas, bloating, and diarrhea.
5. Blood sugar spikes
Along with being high in fructose, corn is also a complex carbohydrate. This means that it breaks down slowly in the body, causing your blood sugar to rise gradually. However, for people with diabetes or other blood sugar disorders, eating corn can cause dangerous spikes in blood sugar levels.
6. Inflammation
Corn is a pro-inflammatory food, which means that it can contribute to inflammation throughout the body. This can lead to a host of health problems, including arthritis, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders.
7. Gut damage
The pesticides and herbicides used on corn can damage the delicate lining of the gut, making it more permeable. This allows toxins and bacteria to enter the bloodstream, which can trigger inflammation and other health problems.
8. Nutrient deficiencies
Corn is largely composed of carbohydrates and lacks many essential nutrients. This includes vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are necessary for good health.
9. Antinutrients
Corn also contains antinutrients, which are substances that interfere with the absorption of nutrients. This can lead to deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, as well as other health problems.
10. Weight gain
Because corn is high in carbohydrates and low in other nutrients, it can contribute to weight gain. This is especially true if you eat a lot of processed corn products, like corn chips or popcorn. If you're trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, it's best to avoid corn altogether.
