“My manicurist told me you can only absorb 27 grams of protein at one time. Where does the rest of it go?” I got this questions in a DM not to long ago, so I just have to address this!

Here’s the truth: There is no fixed limit on how much protein your body can absorb at once. This idea that 27 grams is the magic number is completely outdated and oversimplified. In fact, researchers recently put this to the test with a 100-gram bolus of protein—way more than most people would eat in one sitting. And guess what? The body absorbed all of it.

Does that mean your body uses every gram for muscle protein synthesis in that moment? No. But protein isn’t just for muscle—it’s essential for enzyme production, immune function, hormone regulation, and even neurotransmitter support. What this study found is that while your body may not immediately shuttle all of that protein into muscle, it still gets used—just over a longer period of time.

👍🏼 You’re not “wasting” protein by eating more than 27 grams in one meal. In fact, for optimal muscle growth, satiety, and metabolic health, most people—especially women over 40—should be aiming for at least 30-50 grams of protein per meal.

So the next time someone tries to tell you there’s a cap on protein absorption, you can confidently say: That’s a myth—and science proves it! Keep prioritizing protein, and your body will know exactly what to do with it.
