For my 60th birthday, I set a goal: to get in the best shape of my life. Not just to prove a point, but to show what’s actually possible when you focus on building muscle, fueling properly, and training with intention.
I hadn’t done a DEXA body scan since I was 39, so I trained specifically for it. I increased my calories slightly—because if your goal is to build muscle, you have to give your body what it needs to grow. I lifted heavy, stayed consistent, and dialed in my nutrition. And when I finally stepped in for that scan?
My muscle mass at 59 was exactly the same as it was at 39. Same lean body mass, same fat-free mass, same overall weight. And then, just to take things one step further, I went into a cutting phase—and got back down to my body composition from my 20s.
But here’s the kicker: I’m actually stronger now than I was in my 20s. That’s the power of resistance training, smart nutrition, and prioritizing muscle as you age.
So if you’re in your 40s, 50s, or beyond and thinking it’s too late to get strong, think again. Your body is capable of so much more than you realize—you just have to put in the work.
